I feel mixed about going to war with Iraq. On the one hand, they haven't done anything to us to merit a war, and Herr Idiot G-dub wants to, which kidn of throws it into question. But where does one draw the line between stepping in and stopping evil and letting people govern themselves? After all, it's not the job of the United States to step in and make the entire world Westernized. People have a right to live however they want to, Islamic fundamentalism, dictatorship, silly hats only, that sort of thing.
So, in my head, I keep coming back to Hitler. I favor the decision to stop Hitler, and his massacre of non-Aryans. But when should we have intervened? Should there be a universally accepted system of human rights that one cannot violate, or does that go against the concept of self-governing?
Let's look at Saddam. He invaded Iran. He invaded Kuwait. In all likelihood he wants to build weapons of mass destruction, for whatever purpose. The ethnic minorities in Iraq hate him, and want him gone. He's probably not the best person to have in power, but does that justify America waging a war on him? What about all of the Iraqi pawns that will die as a result? Is that fair, just to get rid of Saddam?
This is why I'm not going to protests, and I'm not for the war either. I'm making an informed decision to abstain.
I'm also going to fall into the inescapable inner circles of thought Wednesday night, and escape Monday night. Prepare yourself for my absence.
So, I'm in Berkeley. And when I finally give this thing a real update, it'll be a doozy. I promise. I don't have anything to write about, but I promise anyway.
